Cedar Deck

Cedar has very nice properties for deck material. It is a soft wood that is naturally resistant to rot and decay. Cedar has a nice light color and a fragrant scent. It is abundant, affordable, and easy to work with. Cedar is a great material for building pergolas, benches, planters, privacy walls, arbors, and gazebos. Like all natural woods cedar requires staining to prevent checking and graying. There are a variety of species and grades available. Western Red Cedar is the most common species. Higher grade materials will have fewer knots and defects. Hot dipped galvanized, aluminum, or stainless steel nails and screws should be used to prevent staining the surface of the wood. Cleaning a cedar deck is important because leaves, dirt, debris, and grease can create stains over time.
